BHAIYA DOOZ…THE FESTIVAL OF AFFECTION
Bhaiya-dooz is a festival of sisters, who shows their affection to their brothers by applying Tilak on their foreahead and giving them sweets and dry coconut. In return, Brother gives blessing, money and assurance of her security.
Why we celebrate Bhaiya Dooz
- As per Sanatana Mythology, after killing the evil Narakasur, Lord Krishna met his sister Subhadra who welcome him with sweets and flowers. She affectionately marked Tilak on Krishna's forehead. This was supposed to be the origin of this festival.
- Another name for the day is Yamadvitiya. On this day (2nd Lunar day, dweetya, i.e. Second day of new moon), Yama (the God of Death) met his sister Yamuna.
