Chhath is a Hindu festival and a very antique festival of the Hindu, also, known as Dala Chhath or Surya Shashti. As per the Vedic Lunar Calender, it is celebrated on the 6th tithi of the month of Kartika (month of October or November).

We offer thanks to Sun for blessing life on the earth and worship the Sun on this auspicious day. As per Vedic Astrology, Sun owns the karaka of the Soul and a wide variety of deceases (like bone, right eye, father, Fever, leprosy, etc.). Worshipping Lord Sun on this auspicious day could be a lot of help in these.

Also, we worship Chhathi Maiya (the Spouse of the Lord Surya) on this day, Chhathi Maiya is also known as Usha in the Vedas. Usha means dawn (the first light of the day). People pray to Chhathi Maiya to overcome their troubles as well as to get the ultimate liberation.

Ritual

• Wake up early in the morning.
• Take a holy bath in the Ganga or any river
• Keep fast for the whole day
• Sometimes, people even don’t drink water and keep standing in the water for a long time.
• Offer prasad and water (Aragh) to the rising Sun.

History and Origin of Chhath Puja

Chhath puja has great significance. It is assumed that the Chhath puja was first started by the Surya Putra Karna. He was a great warrior and ruled over the Anga Desh (Munger district of Bihar). Earlier, the Purohits (Hindu Priest) were used to perform the traditional puja of the Lord Sun. They used to chant the Rigveda hymns while worshiping the Sun. During Mahabharat Era, Chhath puja was celebrated by Draupadi and Pandavas of Hastinapur to get their lost kingdom.

Another history behind Chhath puja is the story of Lord Rama. Lord Rama and Maa Sita had kept this fast and offer puja to the Lord Sun in the month of Kartik in Shukla Paksha after returning to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Since then, Chhath puja became a significant and traditional festival in our religion.

छठ व्रत कथा (Chhath Puja Katha):

एक थे राजा प्रियव्रत उनकी पत्नी थी मालिनी। राजा रानी नि:संतान होने से बहुत दु:खी थे। उन्होंने महर्षि कश्यप से पुत्रेष्ठि यज्ञ करवाया। यज्ञ के प्रभाव से मालिनी गर्भवती हुई परंतु न महीने बाद जब उन्होंने बालक को जन्म दिया तो वह मृत पैदा हुआ। प्रियव्रत इस से अत्यंत दु:खी हुए और आत्म हत्या करने हेतु तत्पर हुए।

प्रियव्रत जैसे ही आत्महत्या करने वाले थे उसी समय एक देवी वहां प्रकट हुईं. देवी ने कहा प्रियव्रत मैं षष्टी देवी हूं।मेरी पूजा आराधना से पुत्र की प्राप्ति होती है, मैं सभी प्रकार की मनोकामना पूर्ण करने वाली हूं। अत: तुम मेरी पूजा करो तुम्हे पुत्र रत्न की प्राप्ति होगी। राजा ने देवी की आज्ञा मान कर कार्तिक शुक्ल षष्टी तिथि को देवी षष्टी की पूजा की जिससे उन्हें पुत्र की प्राप्ति हुई। इस दिन से ही छठ व्रत का अनुष्ठान चला आ रहा है।

एक अन्य मान्यता के अनुसार भगवान श्रीरामचन्द्र जी जब अयोध्या लटकर आये तब राजतिलक के पश्चात उन्होंने माता सीता के साथ कार्तिक शुक्ल षष्ठी तिथि को सूर्य देवता की व्रतोपासना की और उस दिन से जनसामान्य में यह पर्व मान्य हो गया और दिनानुदिन इस त्यहार की महत्ता बढ़ती गई व पूर्ण आस्था एवं भक्ति के साथ यह त्यहार मनाया जाने लगा।

छठ व्रत विधि (Chat Vrat Vidhi & Traditions)

इस त्यहार को बिहार, झारखंड, उत्तरप्रदेश एवं भारत के पड़ोसी देश नेपाल में हर्षोल्लास एवं fनयम निष्ठा के साथ मनाया जाता है। इस त्यहार की यहां बड़ी मान्यता है। इस महापर्व में देवी षष्ठी माता एवं भगवान सूर्य को प्रसन्न करने के लिए स्त्री और पुरूष दोनों ही व्रत रखते हैं। व्रत चर दिनो का होता है पहले दिन यानी चतुर्थी को आत्म शुद्धि हेतु व्रत करने वाले केवल अरवा खाते हैं यानी शुद्ध आहार लेते हैं। पंचमी के दिन नहा खा होता है यानी स्नान करके पूजा पाठ करके संध्या काल में गुड़ और नये चावल से खीर बनाकर फल और मिष्टान से छठी माता की पूजा की जाती है फिर व्रत करने वाले कुमारी कन्याओं को एवं ब्रह्मणों को भोजन करवाकर इसी खीर को प्रसाद के तर पर खाते हैं। षष्टी के दिन घर में पवित्रता एवं शुद्धता के साथ उत्तम पकवान बनाये जाते हैं. संध्या  के समय पकवानों को बड़े बडे बांस के डालों में भरकर जलाशय के निकट यानी नदी, तालाब, सरोवर पर ले जाया जाता है। इन जलाशयों में ईख का घर बनाकर उनपर दीया जालाया जाता है।

व्रत करने वाले जल में स्नान कर इन डालों को उठाकर डूबते सूर्य एवं षष्टी माता को आर्घ्य देते हैं। सूर्यास्त के पश्चात लोग अपने अपने घर वापस आ जाते हैं. रात भर जागरण किया जाता है। सप्तमी के दिन सुबह ब्रह्म मुहूर्त में पुन: संध्या काल की तरह डालों में पकवान, नारियल, केला, मिठाई भर कर नदी तट पर लोग जमा होते हैं। व्रत करने वाले सुबह के समय उगते सूर्य को आर्घ्य देते हैं। अंकुरित चना हाथ में लेकर षष्ठी व्रत की कथा कही और सुनी जाती है. कथा के बाद प्रसाद वितरण किया जाता है और फिर सभी अपने अपने घर लट आते हैं। व्रत करने वाले इस दिन परायण करते हैं।

इस पर्व के विषय में मान्यता यह है कि जो भी षष्टी माता और सूर्य देव से इस दिन मांगा जाता है वह मुराद पूरी होती है। इस अवसर पर मुराद पूरी होने पर बहुत से लोग सूर्य देव को दंडवत प्रणाम करते हैं। सूर्य को दंडवत प्रणाम करने का व्रत बहुत ही कठिन होता है, लोग अपने घर में कुल देवी या देवता को प्रणाम कर नदी तट तक दंड देते हुए जाते हैं। दंड की प्रक्रिया इस प्रकार से है पहले सीघे खडे होकर सूर्य देव को प्रणाम किया जाता है फिर पेट की ओर से ज़मीन पर लेटकर दाहिने हाथ से ज़मीन पर एक रेखा खींची जाती है। यही प्रक्रिया नदी तट तक पहुंचने तक बार बार दुहरायी जाती है।

Stages of Chhath Puja

Significance and Scientific stages (six) of the Chhath puja:

• The belief in the fast and cleanliness of the body on the festival identifies the detoxification of the body and mind in order to set up the body and mind to accept cosmic solar energy.
• Standing in water with half of the body inside the water diminishes the escape of energy as well as facilitates the Prana to elevate to the Sushumna.
• The entrance of cosmic solar energy takes place in the pineal, pituitary, and hypothalamus glands (known as the Triveni) by the retina and optic nerves.
• Triveni gets activated.
• After activation of the Triveni, the spine gets polarized and the body of the devotee gets transformed into a cosmic powerhouse and gets the Kundalini Shakti.
• At this stage, the devotee is fully able to conduct, recycle and pass on the energy to the entire universe.
